5 Tips for People Contemplating a Divorce in California

1.  Talk with your spouse

Have a talk with your spouse and work out as many issues you can regarding

child custody and child visitation, child support, spousal support, and division of assets and debts.

This way you will have an understanding of which direction your divorce will go.   It is important to know whether your divorce would be amicable or litigious and what issued would need to be resolved so your attorney can strategize a plan for a more efficient resolution.

2.  Keep your cool

Just know that everything will be ok in the end with a good, experienced attorney on your side. Keep your cool. If you keep your emotions out you can make rational decisions based on the merits of the case as opposed to using the legal procedure to retaliate causing a long, drawn out battle.

3.  Find an experienced divorce attorney that you connect with

If you find an divorce and family lawyer that has a good reputation, chances are that they know what they are doing.  The only thing that really matters is how well you connect with your divorce attorney and whether you are on the same strategic plan.   This person should be by yourself working together to move your case forward.  It is important that you trust, connect with and feel comfortable with your divorce attorney so that you can work together.

4.  Keep the children out of the drama and legal proceedings

If you discuss the legal proceedings with your children your are getting them involved in a stressful, adult world that will only relay the message to them that you are angry at their parent.  Remember the other parent is 1/2 of their DNA and if you bad mouth the parent you bad mouth your children, hurt their feelings and cause them unnecessary stress.  Children have no place in the legal proceedings.

5.  Be informed.

The divorce process is a complicated proceeding.  It is best to become knowledgeable to make the best decisions. This comes with a good lawyer that will keep you well-informed.
